Black River Drive-In Theatre

Black River, New York

Black River Drive-In Theatre has one of the most remarkable second-act stories in New York drive-in history. Originally opened in 1950 along State Route 3 in the small village of Black River โ€” just west of Watertown in Jefferson County โ€” the drive-in operated for years before closing. A dedicated local couple who grew up going to the drive-in as children rescued and restored it, reopening the theater in 2008 to the delight of the surrounding community. Today the single-screen theater fits up to 500 cars and broadcasts its double features in stereo on 87.9 FM. Adult tickets are $8 and children 7โ€“11 are $3, with kids 6 and under free; active military receive a discount at $6 with valid ID. The drive-in runs mid-April through September, giving Fort Drum families and North Country residents a beloved summer tradition. The restoration and continued operation of the Black River Drive-In is a testament to what a community and dedicated owners can accomplish.
