Transit Drive-In Theatre

Lockport, New York

Transit Drive-In Theatre is New York State's largest drive-in, having grown from a single-screen operation that opened on August 1, 1952 into a five-screen, 1,500-car entertainment complex over seven decades of continuous expansion. Located on Transit Road in Lockport, Niagara County — about 25 miles east of Niagara Falls and 30 miles north of Buffalo — the Transit has added screens steadily: Screen 2 in 1994, Screen 3 in 1996, Screen 4 in 2001, and Screen 5 in 2016. Today five simultaneous films run each night on state-of-the-art digital projection, each screen with its own FM stereo frequency. Adults pay $12 and children pay $8. The sheer scale of the Transit Drive-In — 1,500 parking spaces across five screens — makes it one of the largest drive-in complexes in the entire eastern United States. For Western New York families, it has been a beloved multi-generational tradition, and its continued growth into the 2010s demonstrates that the drive-in format, far from dying, is still very much alive.
